Previously, Blizzard has announced that "World of Warcraft" ended the quarter with 5.5 million subscribers. According to the Investor report released by Activision Blizzard, despite the declining subscription numbers, "World of Warcraft" is still the leading subscription‐based MMORPG worldwide.
Additionally, despite the nine-year low of 5.5 million subscribers, game developer Brian Holinka is still optimistic on the future of the MMORPG. According to Holinka's recent interview with GameSpot, he believes that "World of Warcraft" remains as the overall highest-performing subscription-based online game in the world. Holinka told GameSpot during BlizzCon 2015, "We don't spend a lot of time concerning ourselves with it. We focus mostly on just trying to make the game as good as it can be."
History for "World of Warcraft" has shown that subscription grows back with the release of new content. This is probably why the developers of the MMORPG are not worried about the latest plunge in subscription number.
Holinka has also explained why the next expansion "Legion" isn't coming until 2016, "We want to take all the time we really need make something that is up to the standards that everybody expects." He added, "We just felt like we needed this time to continue to make things better. And really, ultimately, Legion is shaping up to be I think probably the best expansion we've ever made." Holinka has also revealed that two of Legion's most captivating features are the new Order Halls and the Demon Hunter class.
Holinka likewise believes that the upcoming "Warcraft" movie by Duncan Jones will have a positive effect for the MMORPG.
In another news, Blizzard has announced the release window of the latest "World of Warcraft" expansion "Legion." According to GameSpot, it was announced during BlizzCon 2015 opening ceremony that the expansion will arrive in summer 2016. A battle.net image states that expected game release is on or before Sept. 21, 2016.
