Honolulu Police Shoot 17-year-old Student in the Arm During Scuffle

Honolulu police shot and injured a 17-year-old student after he allegedly attacked officers with a kitchen knife.

Two shots were fired, one of which hit the boy's arm, while the officers were punched and received minor lacerations, the Honolulu Star Adviser reported Maj. Frank Robinson, head of Honolulu Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, as saying.

The student was reportedly in good condition when he was taken away by paramedics.

According to Robinson, police arrived at Roosevelt High School around 8:30 a.m. to pick up the student who had repeatedly run away from home. When they arrived, the boy became combative.

The officers involved in the incident had 10 or more years of experience each, police said. The one who fired the shots will be put on administrative duty while the case is investigated, per procedure, the Star Adviser reported.

According to Hawaii News Now, a press conference held on the school's campus revealed that the student would be charged with three counts of attempted murder.

Students at the high school were released at 10 a.m. due to the incident, a tweet from the Hawaii Department of Education stated.

"Gunshots was ringing out here and police and sirens was coming up here at this school. And my grandson was texting me he loved me and I knew something was wrong," Karen Hamilton told KHON2. "I was fearful for him and the other children for him to experience something like that here in Hawaii. I was very fearful."

Faith Kalamau King, the mother of a freshman attending Roosevelt High, found out about the event through Facebook, at which point she left work to come to the school.

"I want to make sure he was OK," she told the Star Advertiser. "To me he's not OK until I see him in my arms. My heart is beating so fast. There have been so many shootings of this kind on the mainland."
