Nokia Smartwatch: Is the Company Planning To Enter Wearable Tech Market? Experts Believe So

Nokia looks to be staging a comeback with its own line of wearable devices.

Motley Fool posted an article stating that the former communications titan may just be in the brink of unveiling its plans to develop and manufacture smartwatches in the near future. Nokia's board of directors has recently proposed to amend the company's constitution, particularly Article 2, and one of the changes brought forward is the development of "consumer wearables".

A post by Tech Times published the whole article, which reads:

"These products, software and services relate to, among others, network infrastructure for telecommunication operators and other enterprises, the internet of things, human health and well-being, multi-media, big data and analytics, mobile devices and consumer wearables and other electronics."

While there is no direct indication that Nokia was referring to the development and production of a smartwatch, experts can't help but notice that the article mentions "human health and well-being" as the proposed focus of the company's future efforts. A number of smartwatches available in the market today are built with fitness features like heart rate monitor and accelerometer, according to PCMag.com.

This development has further given credence to rumors that Nokia is indeed poised to re-enter the device market, this time with a smartwatch in tow.

Prior to Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's handset division, the latter has already crafted plans and designs for their own wearable tech with the codename Moonraker.

"Moonraker was a Nokia design," wrote Quinten Plummer of Tech Times. "But its user interface looked like Nokia had taken a page out of Microsoft's playbook on Metro tiles, the design scheme that replaced the start menu in the first version of Windows 8."

For tech and entertainment writer and Motley Fool contributor Leo Sun, the current smartwatch market situation is conducive for growth, even though it is dominated by Apple and Samsung.

"Research firm IDC expects total wearable device shipments (smartwatches, fitness bands, and other trackers) to rise 164% annually this year to 76.1 million units. By 2019, that figure could more than double to 173.4 million."
