Google Nexus 6P Reviews & Problems: Spontaneous Rear Glass Panel Cracking Reported

On Tuesday, users of Google Nexus 6P, manufactured by Huawei, reported damages to the phone which includes spontaneous rear glass panel cracking. Some users took to Twitter and Reddit to prove their claims and express their concerns, a report from Tech Times said.

"If this issue was affecting the iPhone, the 'controversy' would be called Crackgate, Shattergate or some other equally snappy and pointless title, but as the problem affects a lesser known device, it has yet to attract a nickname. The Nexus 6P was launched by Google back in September and has received widespread critical praise. Over the weekend, however, a number of users have reported the same issue of the glass panel -- which covers the protruding camera enclosure on the rear -- shattering for no obvious reason," International Business Times said.

A Reddit user named jonny_rat posted a photo that shows a damaged glass window at the back of his phone. He claims that the phone's rear glass panel has been spontaneously broken without any cause.

"Well, that was a surprise. For me, and the cat," wrote jonny_rat as quoted in Tech Times. "It was [sitting] on a table next to me when I heard the glass snap, leaving a little snowfall of shavings on the table under it. It's now continuing to crack away to itself."

Reddit users freshprinceofsf and Backglasscrack123 also experienced the same problem and also shared photos as proof that Nexus 6P's glass panels cracked too.

"This could be caused by the method they use to temper the glass. The method used to temper Gorilla glass involves giving the glass ion baths to strengthen it. Due to the strong attraction of the glass particles to one another and compression of the whole, the glass develops lines of internal torque and stress, leading to explosive results if the glass is impacted or pressed from the wrong angle. Because most of the potential damage to your screen comes from the face of the glass, they temper it to resist head on impact, at the cost of durability in sheer impacts. To make up for this, most screens (including the 6P's) have a very small plastic shock ring between the case and the screen. The visor does not appear to have one of these," Reddit user RedHeadedMenace wrote, assessing the problem.

"Our review unit didn't crack under the pressure, making us suspect there was a manufacturing batch flaw. Some users have piped up claiming their unit is fine after weeks of use, but it doesn't look too good for the Chinese-made Nexus device," Digital Trends said.
