'Google Maps' Can Update Even on Offline Mode

'Google Maps' has just gotten even better. The navigation and map application will now be able to update Android users even on offline mode.

The offline navigation feature that was previewed at the Google developers conference earlier this year has began to roll out in the updated version of Google Maps, exclusively made for Android-powered devices. Apple smartphone and tablet users will have to wait for the version crafted for them which is coming soon, according to Amanda Bishop, Google product manager.

"Google Maps is taking steps to help people across the globe find directions and get where they're going, even when they don't have an Internet connection," Bishop said in a blog post.

"Now you can download an area of the world to your phone, and the next time you find there's no connectivity -- whether it's a country road or an underground parking garage -- Google Maps will continue to work seamlessly."

Google Maps earlier versions allow users to download maps in order for them to view such offline. However, these versions does not allow the user to have a complete direction, block by block; nor would allow searches for the exact locations; nor display further information needed such as business hours and the like.

The latest version of Google Maps, on the lighter note, has capabilities to download maps to smartphones while visiting Wi-Fi hotspots in order to avoid further telecommunication charges.

The update on Google Maps would be helpful to travelers that are on areas that lacks internet coverage.

According to Bishop, approximately 60 percent of the world still lacks Internet coverage, making it unrealistic to use online smartphone mapping services for finding one's way.

What do you think of the new Google Maps update? Are you happy that it can finally be helpful to users despite going offline? Have you upgraded your version yet?
