Real Estate Advice: 5 Tips to Achieve an Energy-Efficient Home

In achieving a comfortable and cozy home, you may need to pay an expensive price. However, you can save on your energy consumption and expenses if you maintain an energy-efficient home.

Realty Times listed tips on how to achieve an energy-efficient home. Here are some of them:

1. Plan your windows to be the source of proper ventilation.

Your windows are the main sources of heat in your home. If you have a room that is well-ventilated, the windows must be the right ones. One thing to remember is to not use metal as window frame material. This is because metal conducts heat. Vinyl frames or insulated fiber glass are the best options to take.

2. Seal your home's thermal envelope.

Your home can become hot through air that passes through holes in your window frames and doors, beneath the baseboards and around flues and chimneys. Be sure that your windows are properly hinged and other areas are enclosed. So when you use your air-conditioner, heat from outside will not be able to get in. For leaks on these areas, you can use caulk, weather stripping or expandable spray foam insulation.

3. Upgrade your home's insulation.

Most homes only have the minimum required insulation available especially older homes, which may not even pass the minimum requirement due to the insulation becoming too wet, compressed or shifted.

The attic should have an added insulation. This will have the largest effect on the coziness of your home. Again, make sure that insulation installment will leave no gaps and are properly done.

Those are some tips provided by Realty Times on how to achieve a comfortable, cozy and energy-efficient home. If your home is well-ventilated, the usage of energy-powered appliances such as air conditioner, electric fan and coolers will be minimized.
