Huell Howser’s dream home listed for $395,000 following his death

It's been just over a year since Huell Howser, the iconic television personality perhaps best known for his travel show "California's Gold," succumbed to prostate cancer, and now his desert dream home Twentynine Palms, located a two-and-a-half hour's drive from Los Angeles, has been listed for $395,000.

Howser mainly lived in Palm Springs, but he spent time in several other homes, including his California abode, which he called his "dream home," says Laist.com.

Built in 1953, Howser renovated the property during the latter part of the 1990s, giving it his personal touches. This 2,221-square-foot industrial home features two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. It also boasts a den of a mid-century ambience.

Amazingly, the bathroom wall of Howser's home features a mosaic of the California seal. An overabundance of palm trees, both in the front of the house and also in the backyard, gives the house a typical Californian look.

Howser once said that he took a liking to the house while traveling through the desert, and bought it immediately for $160,000 after it was put up for sale in 1997. He started remodeling the house in his own way, transforming the garage into a furnished entertainment room with moveable, glass-paneled walls.

He also constructed a detailed kitchen with concrete countertops and stainless steel baseboards. The house also has an inverted streetlight fixture from the mid-century that serves as the master bath, says the listing.

Considered to be an architectural gem, Twentynine Palms sits on an 11.9 acre plot. The premises also include a swimming pool surrounded by native plants, giving it the appearance of a little oasis from some distance.

Howser was very popular for hosting the travel show "California's Gold" at KCET for California PBS stations. This travel show was based in Los Angeles. Also an actor and voice artist of repute, Howser died of prostate cancer Jan. 7, 2013 at the age of 67.
