Dustin Hoffman quietly sold his colossal three-floor San Remo apartment for just over $21 million, according to a report in The Real Stalker, which said the property changed hands in an off-market deal some weeks back.
Hoffman listed his massive residence covering an area of roughly 8,000 square feet for $25 million way back during the fall of 2002. This time, however, the property listing was not available, and it was sold to a mysterious buyer Jan. 14.
Constructed in 1930, the apartment was designed by the renowned architect Emery Roth. The report says that the present building came up on a plot where a hotel, also called The San Remo, existed. In 1972, this coveted building became a cooperative and today its affluent inhabitants enjoy several premium services, including a 24-hour doorman, two upscale foyers, private as well as partially private elevator landings, an exclusive health club, oversized storage rooms and shared laundry facilities.
Hoffman's former apartment represents a combination of three separate units, which cover almost half of the 15th floor and the entire 16th and 17th floors of the prominent building adjacent to New York City's Central Park.
Several celebrities have occupied this plush building since 1972, including Tiger Woods, Demi Moore, Steven Spielberg, Steve Jobs, Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Donna Karan, Tony Randall and Glenn Close. Madonna made an attempt to acquire a three-bedroom, $1.2 million apartment in the building in the mid-1980s, when her fame was at its zenith, but her bid was turned down by the cooperative's board.
Hoffman's property records show that in addition to the triplex at San Remo, the actor also owns luxurious homes in London's Kensington area and Broad Beach in Malibu, Calif. However, he is reported to mainly live in an upscale Brentwood, Calif. home spread over two acres.
Since 1960, Hoffman has worked in numerous films, television shows and the theater and is well-known for portraying anti-hero characters. He was nominated for as many as seven Academy Awards and won for his role in "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "Rain Man." In addition, he was nominated for 13 Golden Globes and won six, including an honorary Golden Globe.
