Google plans to offer 10GB Internet speeds in next three years

Google has announced that it is working on a project to offer 10-gigabit Internet speeds to consumers in just three years.

A report in USA Today quotes an executive of the Mountain View, California-based search engine giant as saying that the company is currently working on the project, which will offer a broadband service that is 10 times faster compared to its existing Fiber service. According to Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette, the company hopes to make it available within three years.

Describing the project as Google's passion for speed, Pichette called it the future of the Internet.

Currently, Google's Fiber Service offers data transfer at speeds of 1 gigabit (roughly 1,000 megabits) per second. At present, the Google Fiber service is only available in Kansas City, although the tech giant has announced plans to extend the service to other areas like Austin, Texas. In remaining areas of the United States, the average internet speed is 9 megabits.

Pichette said that 10-gigabit Internet will augment the use of software in the form of a service as it would enable the users to run more critical applications, especially those that are data-intensive, over the Internet.

Addressing the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference last Wednesday, Pichette said that the world is moving in this direction. While it would take another 10 years for this to happen, Google is trying to make it available in another three years.

"It may happen over a decade, but why wouldn't we make it available in three years? That's what we're working on. There's no need to wait," USA Today quotes the Google CFO as saying.

Pichette previously served as an executive at Bell Canada from early 2001 until July 2008. The company offers a speedy, fiber optic Internet service to consumers in Canada.

Google is not the sole tech firm working on faster Internet services, however. Researchers in the UK announced last year that they have already accomplished 10 gigabits per second data transmission speeds using "li-fi" - a wireless Internet connectivity technology that utilizes light to transfer data.
