The legendary Doheny estate, home of the late William H. Doheny and Onnalee Doheny, has been listed on the Bel-Air Multiple Listing Service for sale for the first time for a whopping $43 million, making it one of the most expensive Los Angeles homes to be listed recently, says the Los Angeles Times.
Located in the sought after East Gate region in Old Bel-Air, the Doheny estate offers exceptional privacy to its owners. The gated property covers more than 3.5 acres and is adorned with a regal one-story, 10,000-square-foot mansion, which was built in 1963. The estate derives its name from oil tycoon Edward Laurence Doheny, who drilled the maiden oil well close to Los Angeles during the latter part of the 1800s and founded the Union Oil Company.
A gated, long driveway leads to the mansion, which features eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms. In addition, the Doheny home includes a grand room, a family room that boasts of a fireplace and a bar, a formal dining room, a card room, a billiard room and an office. The estate offers a beautiful view of the city as well as the ocean.
Outside, there is a large swimming pool surrounded by brick decking and a parking space that can accommodate about 20 cars.
William H. Doheny built the house and lived there with his wife Onnalee for more than five decades after the couple sold their home on Los Angeles' Stone Canyon Road. William was a prominent businessman and investor, while Onnalee a philanthropist. The couple were neighbors with various eminent personalities, including Presidents Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush on different occasions. Former First Lady Nancy Reagan currently lives immediately next to the Doheny estate.
The property is listed with real estate agents Rick Hilton, Jeff Hyland, Judy Feder, Tyrone McKillen and Mich Rogers of Hilton & Hyland/Christie's International Real Estate.
