"Reign" showrunner Laurie McCarthy talks about what happens now that King Francis is officially dead.
Right before the third season of "Reign" kicked off, showrunner McCarthy announced that King Francis will meet his end sometime in the current season and it happened in episode five. According to Entertainment Weekly, McCarthy tells fans of the show that there is more to watch out for now that the beloved king is no longer around. She reveals that the death of Francis will have an impact on everyone and everything.
The first thing the showrunner said when asked what the death of Francis meant to those he left behind, especially Mary, is that she will eventually find romance again. McCarthy further elaborates on the characters that will be the most affected by the demise of the king.
She starts with Catherine who emerged as a strong leader after some struggles. She takes the post as France's regent and will hold it for decades. But things will not fall in line for Catherine. McCarthy said, "His death shifts the power dynamic at court between Narcisse and Catherine. There's going to be a huge battle for the regency coming up and a blossoming relationship between she and Narcisse because his ambition is going to be awakened again."
Mary and Elizabeth will also be in a fierce competition to snag the best man as Mary is now under pressure to remarry for political reasons, McCarthy explained.
Meanwhile in a recap by TV Line, the fifth episode of "Reign" showed the fulfillment of Nostradamus' prophecy about the impending death of a king. Fans wept with Mary as she bid her husband one last goodbye. "I will never love anyone the way I love you," Mary said.
In his last gasp before succumbing to death, Francis responded to Mary's farewell words by saying, "I pray to God that you do."
