Zindzi and Zenani, daughters of Nelson and Winnie Mandela, will be attending the 86th Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences award ceremony in Los Angeles to witness an exclusive live performance of the world-famous rock band U2, whose song "Ordinary Love" has been nominated for an Oscar in the "Original Song" category.
The group wrote "Ordinary Love" for the biopic "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom."
Deadline reports that the daughters were invited by the Academy to watch the performance as Bono and his group were personal friends of Nelson Mandela. In fact, the rock bank has been working in support of the anti-apartheid movement spearheaded by Mandela in South Africa since the late 1970s, when Zindzi and Zenani were just teenagers.
The website quotes the girls saying in a statement: "This is especially meaningful to us because of how much our father loved watching movies. This song was inspired by the beautiful letters that my father and mother exchanged while he was imprisoned at Robben Island."
Earlier, the Academy announced that all the songs nominated for an Oscar this year will be performed live by the artists at the event set to be held March 2. Other nominated songs include "Let It Go" from the movie "Frozen," "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2," and "The Moon Song" from "Her."
"Ordinary Love" is the second song by U2 to be nominated for an Oscar. Earlier, the group's "The Hands That Built America" from "Gangs of New York" was nominated in the Best Original Song category of the 75th Oscars in 2003, but lost to "Lose Yourself," from "8 Mile." On Jan. 12, "Ordinary Love" lost to "All is Lost" in the Original Song category at the 71st Golden Globe Awards.
Earlier this month, the 45th annual NAACP Image Awards held in Pasadena, Calif. paid a special tribute to Nelson Mandela. The honors were led by Oprah Winfrey.
