'Gambit' Movie Update: Doug Liman to Replace Rupert Wyatt? Producers in Talks with Liman to Helm Upcoming Marvel Film

The full-length movie version of Marvel's "Gambit" may have found its new director in Doug Liman.

The original director for "Gambit," Rupert Wyatt, abandoned production in September and now Doug Liman of "Edge of Tomorrow" is being tapped to replace him, said Cosmic Booknews. There are no official announcements yet as to Liman's assignment but reports say the producers are already in talks with the director.

Wyatt left the directorial chair citing conflicts in schedule. However, Cinema Blend reported that there could have been other issues involved. It was more of creative differences that made Wyatt leave the production.

Previous names linked to the directorial seat for the Marvel movie include Shane Black (Iron Man 3), Joe Cornish (Ant-Man), and F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job). Black and Cornish are not new to directing Marvel films, hence the reason they are being connected to the project.

The script for "Gambit" is penned by Josh Zemuter under the treatment of Chris Claremont. Producers include Channing Tatum, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Reid Carolin. Early in August, the "Magic Mike" actor signed a deal to play the Cajun mutant Gambit.

Meanwhile, Lea Seydoux's association with the film has been reported as early as August. However, the "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" actress revealed she has not signed any deal yet, according to Bleeding Cool.

"I just can't make any official announcement, I don't have information," said the French actress. She is being woed to play Bella Donna Boudreaux, the villainess and leader of the Assassins Guild. Although Seydoux has not discounted the fact of being in the film, it would seem like the negotiations are yet to be finalized.

Production has not yet released a plot for the film. No actors have been cast for other roles either. "Gambit," a 20th Century Fox film, is projecting an October 2016 release.
