Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar ‘selfie’ breaks record for most retweets

And the award for most popular selfie goes to...Ellen DeGeneres.

The comedian and popular talk show host's picture taken at the 86th Academy Awards broke the record for the most retweets for a single post, accruing more than 1.7 million in just one hour.

During the two-hour Oscar broadcast, the picture was shared or retweeted by more than 2 million people, beating the record of about 778,000 retweets for President Barack Obama's "Four More Years" re-election victory photograph showing the president hugging first lady Michelle Obama.

The tweet was so popular, it caused the social media site to crash, locking out users.

"We got an email from Twitter and we crashed and broke Twitter. We have made history," DeGeneres said on stage.

Considering the galaxy of stars in it, perhaps that's not all too surprising.

Included were Meryl Streep, Peter Nyong'o Jr., Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong'o, who won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "12 Years a Slave."

The picture was taken by Cooper on Ellen's Oscar-sponsored Galaxy phone, which the television host and actress used several times during the night - prompting some to deem the selfie as just another promotional ploy.

Soon after Cooper shot the photo, Streep reportedly admitted that the tweet was her first.

DeGeneres, on the other hand, is a prolific tweeter, and had originally gone in for a photo with her and just Cooper when the A-list actors just kept piling on.

Another widely shared photograph from the night included one featuring DeGeneres and actress, singer and dancer Liza Minnelli.
