"Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series" released its episode 6--the game's final installment--last Tuesday, Nov. 17. Entitled "The Ice Dragon," did the game just reveal major spoilers of the HBO television series?
Though the TV series stands apart from the video game, the Telltale game is in fact based on the show. Fans and gamers could not help but wonder if the adventure game contains scenes that are yet to happen in the show, which is yet to premiere its season 6.
Firstly, the ambiguous title cunningly plays around the idea of who the finale hero could be. "Game of Thrones" fans of the show have long speculated that Jon Snow could be the Ice Dragon. He hails from the icy Winterfell, and, if fan theories could be believed, he has dragon blood from his real parents--Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.
In addition, The Hollywood Reporter dishes out other crucial possible "GoT" spoilers. In the game, there is a new army in Westeros that is connected with Daenerys Targaryen. A character named Asher manages to recruit Meereenese pit fighters to go back to the Seven Kingdoms and defeat the Boltons. These fighters will prove to be significant for when Daenerys finally crosses the Narrow Sea and arrives at King's Landing, something that is yet to happen in the HBO series.
In "GoT" Season 5, viewers finally got to see a glimpse of the White Walkers' massive army. The game shows a more detailed look as to how big a deal the storyline really is. It features a mysterious location beyond the Wall called The North Grove, which contains "something powerful."
"Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series" is an adventure game that follows the story of the House of Forrester. Though not mentioned in the show, the Forresters interact with main characters such as Daenerys, Ramsay Bolton, Cersei Lannister, and Margaery Tyrell. Gamers navigate through Westeros and make decisions that will change the course of the story.
In "The Ice Dragon," the conclusion of the series, a player's previous choices from the past episodes will be taken into account.
"It's a nasty web of tension and grief that grants the series its perfect tragic ending, in true Game of Thrones style," Alexa Ray Corriea reviews for GameSpot.
"The Ice Dragon" also retraces familiar scenes from "GoT," including Ramsay's cruelty and Cersei Lannister's scheming ways. The Wildlings, Night's Watch, pit fighters, and the Starks will also be integral to the game's final plot.
"In the end, Telltale's Game of Thrones succeeds in telling a violent, sad story that feels very much at home in the world of Westeros. By the finale, the danger feels real and your choices feel like they have mattered," Corriea concludes. "Telltale's Game of Thrones delivers grand battles and unavoidable heartbreak, and despite some out-of-place or overused elements from the source material, it's a journey in Westeros worth having."
"The Ice Dragon" is now available for download for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and compatible iOS and Android-based devices. As a promo, episode one, "Iron From Ice" is free for download across all platforms. Telltale Games has also released a full-season disc, containing all six episodes, and is out in stores now.
