The New Janis Joplin Documentary is Almost Here

The documentary entitled Janis: Little Girl Blue is directed by Amy Berg. Berg also directed documentaries like Deliver Us From Evil and West of Memphis. According to the Rolling Stone, the documentary started in 2007 when Berg met with Joplon's estate. She talked with artists like Pink and Melissa Etheridge who looked at Joplin's career as a stepping stone for their own careers.

The film includes footage of some of Joplin's best performances in Woodstock 1969, in the Monterey Pop Festival 1967, and in the Festival Express 1970. It will also show interviews with some of Joplin's friends and family, as well as feature some of Joplin's letters to her loved ones.

Many people knew Janis Joplin as a unique figure in the late 1960s. She was the lead singer of a psychedelic rock band called Big Brother and the Holding company. Joplin became one of the most successful female vocalists in a time that was very male dominant, as well as was known as the Queen of Psychedelic Soul. Joplin died from a heroin overdose on Oct. 4, 1970.

Aside from being successful in music, Joplin was also known to be a member of a fictional club called "The 27 Club." The club refers to popular icons in music who died at the age of 27. Majority of those musicians either committed suicide, had a drug or alcohol abuse, was murdered, or had an accident. Included on the list are Joplin, The Rolling Stones' founder and guitarist Brian Jones, guitarist and singer-songwriter Jimi Hendrix, The Doors' vocalist Jim Morrison, Nirvana's frontman and singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain, and recently, singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse.

The documentary is on fire in the American Film Market. According to Variety, Content Media, the company behind the documentary, sold rights for the film to be distributed internationally. Such countries include Australia and New Zealand (via Transmission), Benelux (via VPRO & Periscope / FU Works), France (via Happiness Distribution), Germany and Austria (via Arsenal), Italy (via I-Wonder), Japan (via Medallion Media), Mexico (via Star Castle Distribution), Russia (via Channel 1), Spain (via Avalon), Sweden (via SVT), the U.K. (via BBC and Dogwoof), and recently in the U.S. (via FilmRise).
