It has been observed over the past years that there is an imbalance with the game performances between the teams in the Eastern and Western conferences. The anomaly can be summarized in a fact that West has great teams compared to the East. However, such conjecture is being thwarted by the current standing and performances of the teams in the East Conference.
Most NBA enthusiast won't agree about the idea that the East is better than the West, especially that Golden State Warriors of the Western Conference is leading the pack with an unblemished standing. However, Dallas Mavericks' team owner, Mark Cuban, affirmed such claim. Cuban declared to Tim McMahon via yibada that, "The East is the better conference right now. That's a good thing."
Accordingly a theory behind Cuban's claim, which was reported by cbssports, states that, "Cuban is hoping not only for a better short-term competitive environment for his Mavs, but a longer-term solution, too: realignment. If he can show that the league is in a better place competitively from top-to-bottom regardless of conference, then in theory it would help the argument for balancing the conferences geographically."
But still such improvement is not yet considered as an effect of the league's effort to maintain a balance. For most league executives in an informal poll is not that convinced the strength that the Eastern Conference is displaying. According to cbssports, a Western exec stated that, "Not sure I agree [with Cuban].The record is better right now, but let's see by the end of the season. I still think all in all, the West is deeper at the top, which is what counts the most."
However, Cuban's claim seems to be supported by power ranking released by NBA. For "a total of 20 teams currently are at .500 or better, with 11 of them in the East -- possibly an early indication of a trend toward increased parity," said cbssports.
