There is a rumor suggesting that Ness, Gold Mario and Meta Knight rare Amiibo figures will be easily obtained from other stores since they would no longer be distributed exclusively by selected retailers. This rumor sparks concerns that those figurines would no longer be rare and exclusive as they will soon be widely attained.
According to Design & Trend, the rumors began to swirl when Amiibo Alerts took to Twitter to announce, "Could a non-Walmart exclusive Gold Mario restock be coming soon? Walmart amiibo display no longer shows exclusive." The tweet was accompanied by a photo which shows the absence of the notice that the figure is exclusive to the retailer.
Walmart was the only official retailer of the Gold Mario figure, since its launch but the tweet now proves otherwise. Another source has posted another alarming evidence via Instagram. He added a disclaimer saying, "Food for Thought | On Nov. 8th at 7:53 p.m. @luke____baylor sent me a DM with the photo above. It's apparently from Target; however I was too busy that day to verify the information off the display; hence the reason I never posted about it. With today's news regarding Gold Mario it seems plausible..." So far amiibo_huntsman has not posted a follow up yet.
Ness and Meta Knight are said to be exclusive to Gamestop and Best Buy, respectively. Now the rumors suggest that they can be bought just anywhere. With the restock available to other outlets the Meta Knight might no longer be the "especially coveted Amiibo" that it is now. On the other hand, as alarming as it may be, Amiibo fans who are worried that the figures might lose their rarity can hold on to the hope that those pictures don't really paint the whole story. An official announcement has yet to come from Nintendo.
