All it really takes are high-tech additions to turn your nest into a smart home that you can keep track of even if you are in a Starbucks down the street or enjoying a tropical sunset halfway across the globe.

Realty Times listed these tested and proven tricks in keeping your home safe while you are away according to Realty Times:

Don't advertise your stuff

Burglars usually do a surveillance of a neighborhood to find out which houses are worth breaking into; so don't make yours an attractive and easy target. It's not a good idea to leave the cardboard box of your new HDTV on the curb unless you want to give burglars an idea on which house to break into first.

Don't advertise that you're away

If you will be away for a while, the goal is to make the house look like you are not away and newspapers scattered in the front yard could spark the other bulb in a burglar's mind. You can either stop the paper delivery or ask your good neighbor to get the papers for you as well as take care of flyers in the door and porch.

You don't need to keep the drapes and curtains open, but make sure to have your lights, TV or stereo on timers and turn them on so it looks like somebody's inside. This would deter burglars from getting into your house and move on to the next.

Protection from future loss

Not all burglars are the same - some want TVs and jewelries, others just want words and numbers - just your name, your credit card and bank statements and similar information and documents. You come from work, walk in and not notice anything disturbing, but what you don't know is an identity theft is already working on clearing your bank accounts and credit record.

High-tech home protection

The good ole door, locks, and barking dogs are still effective in keeping a house safe, but it won't hurt to up the security by having a smart home concept. This technology is hugely useful by bring your home security right at your fingertips and the amazing things is, you can control it remotely. Lock and unlock doors, check CCTV feed, motion detectors, or even have a fingerprint lock technology that you can arm and disarm even if you are not at home.
