The hit musical "Miss Saigon" is returning to Broadway in the spring of 2017.
British producer Cameron Mackintosh, who was known for bringing the megahits "Cats," "Les Misérables" and "The Phantom of the Opera" to New York, recently announced he planned to present a revival of "Miss Saigon" on Broadway in the spring of 2017, an article on New York Times' Artsbeat indicated.
The production, which began in London last year, is directed by Laurence Connor. He is currently represented on Broadway as the director of a "Les Misérables" revival and the new musical "School of Rock," which is currently in previews.
The West End's leads include 19-year-old Eva Noblezada who plays Kim and is from North Carollina, and Jon Jon Briones from Los Angeles who plays the engineer. Kim is the role which won Lea Salonga a Tony in 1991. Jonathan Pryce also won a Tony for the role of the engineer.
Noblezada is the daughter of a Filipino father and a Mexican-American mother. She was discovered by a casting director at a high school awards ceremony; Briones was born and raised in the Philippines, the article on the New York Times' Artsbeat indicated.
The article also mentioned that the London production of "Miss Saigon" will close in February and the two stars Noblezada and Briones will come to New York.
The production will play a limited engagement at a Shubert theater to be announced through January 15, 2018, before going on a US national tour. First performance and opening night dates will be released later.
"Miss Saigon" is a love story about an American soldier and a Vietnamese woman set mainly in American-occupied Saigon in 1975.
