Home Design Tips: Expert Advice For Painting Your Walls Perfectly

Thinking of painting your walls at home by yourself? Here are some tips that could help you do so perfectly.

1. Prep your walls. Clean them thoroughly and make sure that every speck of dust and dirt is gone. Elle Décor recommends, "using a dry Swiffer. It will effectively remove dust and dirt from walls and you can easily just throw away the Swiffer rag when you are done." Additionally, fill holes on your walls with Spackle to ensure that your paint application will be smooth. You can even sand your walls to make it even smoother. Lastly, don't forget to prime!

2. If you're painting a rather large area, mix several cans of paint together to ensure that the color remains consistent all throughout. Do it by putting it all in one large bucket. This is advisable since not all paint cans are completely the same in color, so by doing this, at least you'd know that it's going to be one solid shade.

3. You don't have to be an expert to know a proper painting technique. Just follow a 'W' motion, and cover the blank areas as you go. This technique enables the painter to apply pain evenly and with just the right amount. Also, paint in long and continuous strokes. Making It Lovely says that not painting in this manner is one of the most common mistakes. They also advise to let paint completely dry in between strokes, and that it'll always look better after 2-3 coats.

4. Painting around windows and doors? Use lip balm or Vaseline to avoid staining areas that you wouldn't want paint to get on like the hinges or the glass. Put a light coat of it, or you could simply opt for plastic sandwich bags or glad wrap. For an even simpler option, go for some masking or washi tape.
