Oprah Winfrey drops $10.85 million on 60 acres near Telluride Ski Resort

Oprah Winfrey just dropped $10.85 million on 60 acres of land near the Telluride Ski Resort in Colorado, according to various news reports.

Citing people familiar with the deal, the Wall Street Journal said Winfrey wants to build a home there. She purchased the lots through the trust Yellow Brick Road Coo LLC, her longtime friend Bob Greene, a business consultant, helping her with the transaction.

The Journal also states that the property wasn't up for sale. Apparently, Winfrey was so taken with the beautiful mountain views that she approached the owners about buying it. The owners, who happened to be the family of the founders of Publix Super Markets Inc., said they were thrilled to do the deal with Winfrey.

"I know they'll do a great job with what they build," Carol Barnett, daughter of founder George Barnett, told the publication.

However, this was not the first time reps of Winfrey approached the family about a potential sale. About 10 years back, Winfrey had offered to buy the property but the family was not ready to sell at that time.

Winfrey has been a frequent property player. Her most recent real estate purchase was a secluded Nashville residence, which reports suggested she bought for a friend of hers. According to the listing records, the home is a 3,045-square-foot residence sitting on a 0.27-acre lot. Built in 2006, the home has four bedrooms, two full and one half bathrooms.

Winfrey also recently agreed to do away with the famed Harpo Studios in Chicago, where the popular "Oprah Winfrey Show" was shot from 1990 to 2011. Her Chicago residence is also up for sale with a $7.7 million price tag. The home is one of the three units Winfrey owns in the posh Water Tower Place apartment building.

Winfrey has a large property portfolio that includes several properties in California, Hawaii and New Jersey, among other places.
