Not everybody is thrilled about "Final Fantasy VII's" Cloud Strife joining the cast of the Nintendo hit fighting game "Super Smash Bros."
As previously reported Square Enix's Cloud Strife is going to be the latest addition to Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros." for 3DS and Wii U. Along with the announcement, Nintendo had released a 3-minute clip demonstrating the Ultima-wielding character's moves and abilities. It also showed Cloud in his "Advent Children" attire. Mii Fighters wearing Chocobo costumes were featured at the end of the clip.
According to Design and Trend, the Japanese fans however are not thrilled about Cloud being in "Super Smash Bros." The website Legend of Localization, has gathered some of the noteworthy translated reactions from Japanese fans who have expressed varied opinions in gaming sites, 2ch, and Twitter.
Some of those comments were, "Cloud doesn't match Nintendo, shoulda gone with Bartz, though I doubt he'd be popular." Another one is said to have suggested, "If they're gonna put Cloud in there, I think they should really put in popular characters from Famicom and Super Famicom games that were pillars of those systems." All though there was one who expressed happiness over Cloud's "Super Smash" presence, many felt otherwise.
According to Design and Trend, "Final Fantasy VII" was originally intended for Nintendo 64, but a partnership with Sony got the title released for PlayStation exclusively in 1997. Some fans were saddened by this and it is possible that there dislike for Cloud is due to the fact that "Final Fantasy" abandoned Nintendo.
The other criticisms suggests that the Japanese people and those from the west have different perception of Cloud. For example on comment read, "If they're gonna add new characters, someone like Jibanyan or a squid would've been a more exciting choice, I think. But FF7 is REALLY popular with foreigners, so it's probably an attempt to appeal to them."
Super Smash Bros. is available now on 3DS and Wii U. Adding Cloud Strife could be quite a risk for Nintendo but hopefully things might change in the future since Cloud really looks awesome in the trailer that you can see below.
