"Frozen" has become the highest earning animated film of all time, reports Reuters. During the four months since its release, this Oscar-winning movie has earned more than $1 billion from worldwide sales.
Creating box office history, "Frozen" has earned $398.4 million from ticket sales in the domestic market, including the United States and neighboring Canada, since it was released Nov. 27. Quoting figures provided by Disney, Reuters reports that the film earned an additional $647 million from ticket sales in the foreign market, taking its global box office earnings to $1,072,402,000.
According to a report by TODAY, the previous box office record by an animation film was held by "Toy Story 3," which earned $1.063 billion from global ticket sales. The film now ranks at No. 10 among all blockbusters produced globally.
Moreover, "Frozen" is currently ranked at No. 7 for all films produced by Disney, outperforming the action blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," whose global earnings were $1.06 billion, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Released on the eve of the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, "Frozen," which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, is loosely based on the fairy tale "The Snow Queen." The movie's story revolves around a young princess, Elsa, who possesses the power to generate ice and snow.
Citing studio reports, Deadline reports that the film continues to be the top grosser in Japan and Korea, where it has earned $77.1 million, becoming one of the Top Five blockbusters in the last five years there. In the U.K., the movie has earned $64.6 million. The reception in China has also been warm, with ticket sales amounting to $48.9 million.
