Bobby Patton, one of the co-owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has reportedly purchased York Ranch, a working cattle ranch in Grant, N.M.
The Wall Street Journal broke news of the purchase.
Patton reportedly paid for the 291-square-mile plot through a Limited Liability Corp. called Double H Holdings LLC in February. The ranch was listed for $10.44 million with Jeff Buerger of Hall and Hall. However, sources told the Journal, it sold above the asking price.
The area accounts for 36,000 acres of deeded land and about 138,000 acres of leased lots. The ranch also has a main house comprised of three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Other features include a bunkhouse, a garage and other working cattle management facilities. Two landing strips and an airplane hangar are also included.
Located 30 miles from Grant, the York Ranch has 46 grazing pastures that span within the range of 2,000 to 44,000 acres.
The listing describes the ranch as "an expansive block of grazing land surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of contiguous federal and state leased land. Deeded acreage is predominantly short grass rangeland interspersed by smaller arroyos and foothills, providing cover for livestock. In areas dependent on rainfall, the ranch is supplemented by 50 livestock and solar wells, and fenced into 46 individual pastures."
Patton reportedly has an "itch" for cattle ranching given his Texan roots. The Star-Telegram reports that Patton owned a South Texas ranch, which did exceptionally well even during the drought.
"How'd he do it? When he bought the ranch, he also acquired two parcels in a nearby county that had water to grow more than enough hay to feed his 450 cows and their calves even during dry spells. He sells his surplus bales to less-blessed operations nearby," the publication writes.
In February, Patton also purchased another property in Los Angeles for $7 million. The single-family residence located in the Laughlin Park neighborhood of Los Feliz has four bedrooms and four bathrooms, all done up in style. According to the RealEstalker, the house has a rich celebrity history, with comedian W.C. Fields having once rented the property. In the 1980s, comedienne Lily Tomlin purchased the house and painted it all pink.
Property records reveal that media person Dennis Rice previously owned the land starting in 2004.
Before co-purchasing the Dodgers, Patton was a well-known investor dealing in oil, gas and real estate.
