Willem Dafoe spends $3.9 million to acquire West Village penthouse

Willem Dafoe, stage and voice actor and a member of the experimental theater company The Wooster Group, has just spent $3.9 million to purchase a penthouse co-op in New York City's West Village, reports The Real Deal.

Local property records show that Dafoe's penthouse is located atop the seven-story building at 68 Jane Street, also referred to as 812-814 Greenwich Street. Originally, the building was used as a factory, and in the 1970s, it was transformed into a loft space.

The two-bedroom apartment of 58-year-old Dafoe, who recently appeared in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" in the role of a hitman, features 11 arched windows, 12.5-foot ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace.

According to StreetEasy, the property was listed with Jim St. Andre and Peter McCuen of Peter McCuen and Associates for $3.99 million in November.

"It's a rare commodity these days to own a penthouse in the West Village," The Real Deal quotes McCuen as saying.

Currently, the actor, who is a native of Wisconsin, and his Italian actress-director-screenwriter wife Giada Colagrande reside in another unit in the same building built in 1900.

In 2005, Dafoe acquired another co-op located at 67 Perry Street for $1.6 million. In 2008, the "Platoon" actor listed his two-bedroom Hudson Valley modern home in Accord, about 100 miles from the city, for $850,000. He purchased the 2,200-square-foot home in 1988.

Dafoe began his film career in 1981, when he was cast as a cockfighter in "Heaven's Gate," only to have his part later removed during editing. Since then, he has appeared in numerous films, including "Platoon," "Affliction," "Off Limits," "Streets of Fire," "To Live and Die in L.A.," "The Last Temptation of Christ," "Mississippi Burning," "Spider-Man," and "The Aviator." He has also had voice roles in a number of films.

Dafoe has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor twice - in 1986 for "Platoon" and in 2000 for "Shadow of the Vampire."

He has dual American and Italian citizenship and currently divides his time, along with his wife, between Rome, New York City and Los Angeles.
