Yoko Ono, Japanese artist and peace activist, who was married to John Lennon, has just sold her 5,700-square-foot West Village pad for $8.3 million, reports New York Curbed.
The apartment, a former horse stable located at 49 Downing Street, first appeared in the market for an asking price of $8,995,000 and its asking price was slashed to $6.5 million in July, just before it was delisted owing to courtroom hostilities. The co-op was listed again in November for $8.99 million.
In her suit, 80-year-old Ono had claimed that when she tried to sell the penthouse to a family with children this year, the board imposed "arbitrary conditions" to hinder the sale, an earlier report in the New York Post says.
An earlier report in The Observer quotes public records showing that Ono purchased the property for her son Sean Lennon in 1995. Although Sean lived in the apartment for a very brief period, Ono did not try to sell the property until last year.
After she bought the place, Ono transformed the former horse stable into a contemporary home, ideal for living and working. She has, however, retained the original wooden columns and beams, making it comparable to any posh apartment in the area. The penthouse has four large windows, which allow plenty of air and natural light.
According to the listing on Streeteasy, the penthouse includes three bedrooms, three full and one half bathrooms, a library, a spacious kitchen with an adjacent breakfast room and plenty of storage space. The master room is complete with large walk-in closets and a spa-like bathroom. The living room features a fireplace and large glass doors that lead to the terrace.
The penthouse, built in 1908, also comes with a terrace, a greenhouse, a rooftop deck and a private elevator. The home comes with a garage and a private entrance, offering adequate privacy.
Interestingly, the identity of the buyer has not been disclosed.
Currently, Ono lives in an exclusive Dakota apartment, located at on Central Park West, where she lived with Lennon.
