Petition To Stop Adam Lambert To Perform In Singapore Gets 20,000 Signatures

There's a chance Adam Lambert may not be performing in Singapore for New Year's Eve, after all.

A "concerned group of citizens" have petitioned to prevent the singer from performing on account of his "promotion of LGBT rights" and "sexualized" performances.

According to an article on Independent, Adam Lambert's concert was scheduled in the coming new year to headline the popular Countdown 2016 concert during the New Year's Eve in Singapore. But there are concerned citizens and parents opposed this event.

They said that "the singer is 'hardly the kind of performer to send off our historic Jubilee year.'" The group then started a petition and called on the concert organizers --- MediaCorp and the Singapore government ---- to call off the singer's performance.

"Singaporeans [can't] enjoy a good show with their conscience being affronted by lewd acts in the name of entertainment."

The news report added, "In addition, a simple online research would reveal that he is well-known for his active promotion of a highly sexualized lifestyle and LGBT rights, of which are contrary to mainstream Singaporean values."

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that although Adam Lambert is a hit on American Idol, the Singaporean concerned group has gathered around 20,067 of online votes to prevent his performance.

Adam Lambert responded to these petitions through his Facebook account. He said, "I am a uniter, not a divider, and I believe in celebrating the human heart and spirit. I have put together an entirely new show experience for my fans that is kicking off in Singapore."

'We Want Adam Lambert Performing in Countdown 2016' petition organizers reponsed, "The only thing the opposing side has accomplished is embarrassing themselves and the groups that promoted their petition. This is a clear message to those people that their homophobic and discriminatory ways are not welcome in Singapore."

Organizers of the concert said they are sticking with Lambert, a runner-up on American idol who caused controversy during his performance in the 2009 American Music Awards when he kissed his male keyboard player and stimulated sexual acts with dancers.

Sex between men is illegal in Singapore, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
