"Spotlight" Movie Wins Bigtime in Gotham Awards

IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards gave the Best Screenplay and Best Feature to "Spotlight" film which follows the story of the people in Boston Globe who exposed the Boston Archdiocese's efforts of concealing sexual abuse cases against their priests.

According to time.com, Gotham Awards is the first major presentation of the award season which could be sign of bigger awards for the film as they snagged two of the top awards: Best Screenplay and Best Feature.

Also, "Spotlight" received a special award for its cast "which includes Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Billy Crudup and Brian D'Arcy James."

Though a lot of discussion about the movie snagging an Oscar award, it is still early to predict anything as many other films are yet to be released on the last few weeks of the year and first few weeks of next year. Films that people need to watch out for are the Oscar tandem Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper film, "Joy." Also, Quentin Tarantino's "Hateful Eight" is yet to be seen and depending on the director's track record, it won't go unnoticed while Leonardo Di Caprio will be seen on the big screen on Christmas Day on his film with 2015 Best Director Alejandro González Iñárritu's film, "The Revenant."

In a report by nytimes.com, "Spotlight" film is headed to the right path as the Gothams Awards usually give signs as to which movies will be receiving the gold trophy next year on February. Last year's Gotham winner, "The Birdman" received last year Oscar's Best Picture Award.

Other big winners of the night were Bel Powley for an acting award for her film "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" and Paul Dano for "Love and Mercy" while "The Look of Silence" won best documentary award.
