Though it has been long ago, Windows mobile once dominated the world of mobile operating systems. With the dominant presence of Android and iOS, Windows is left backstage and is only remembered for its former glory.
But there is new hope for old Windows Mobile to get back on its feet. They have been making connections with Chinese smartphone giant, Xiaomi. The two companies have agreed to terms which led to the availability of the Windows OS to be downloaded and installed to Xiaomi Mi 4.
Tech in Asia reports that this move from Xiaomi is a peculiar one. Before the smartphone becoming a smartphone empire, Xiaomi's first product was MIUI, a "spin-off" of the Android OS. "Since the first iteration of MIUI - currently on version seven - to now, the company has treated Android as a key part of its business model," says Tech in Asia.
Rumors suggesting the Xiaomi and Microsoft partnership began early this year when Windows OS was opened to developers who are interested in testing the Microsoft product on the Mi4. The developers prepared for nine months before they finally came up with a working ROM.
Now, the download of Windows in Xiaomi's Mi4 has been launched and made official with both companies committing to support. The installation process of the Windows 10 ROM has been said to be easier than installing a custom recovery. Developers from XDA says, "It's even simpler than installing a custom recovery or some home-baked kernels," and they openly accept the challenge as they said, "XDA developers and enthusiasts are not afraid of bugs as this means that there is room for improvement."
One possible reason as to why Xiaomi openly partners with Microsoft in endorsing this OS is the fact that Google has been banned in Chinese territory. Most Android systems are very dependent on Google and most of the OEM OS in China are spin-offs of the Android OS. The use of Windows 10 in devices in China will eliminate that dependence to Google's service and create a truly Google-less Android OS.
