Decorating a living room can be a daunting task for any home owner. While designing the busiest room in the house, one has to keep in mind that the furniture should be in accordance with the size of the area and the wall color should in turn complement the furniture and other accessories.
Experts have listed the top five favourable colors for the living room:
Blue: The color of all seasons brings in a sense of calm and order in a living room. The versatile color makes a room feel cosier and peaceful. Decorators suggest the use of warm blues in social spaces, like the living room, the kitchen, or the dining room, Real Simple reports.
"Blue is a color that works well with many styles of furniture, from traditional to modern," confirms Andrea Magno, color and design expert for Benjamin Moore. "Some people want a deeper shade with warm undertones to create a cozy feeling in a room, while others might go for something light and airy..," Zillow reports.
Red: The color of love adds life and energy to a living room. In order to avoid too much brightness, Kristine Robinson, principal of Robinson Interiors in Jenkintown, PA and a teacher of color psychology and interior design at Temple University, advice home owners to go for accent walls when thinking about a bold color like red.
Benjamin Moore suggests various color combination for an accented red bedroom that can be applied even for a living room.
- Chinaberry (accent wall), Paper Mache (Walls) and Wrought Iron (Trim)
- Raisin torte, Dove Wing and Grape Green (Accent)
Going against traditional colors, design blogger Holly Becker - founder of decor8blog.com and author of "Decorate Workshop: Design and Style Your Space in 8 Creative Steps," has recommended deep charcoal gray for the living room. Becker said that this unique color is gaining popularity among interior designers.
"I love Farrow & Ball's Down Pipe for living rooms," Becker said. "It's a moody, soot-like gray that looks stunning on a focal wall behind a sofa or on all four walls to cozy up a room."
The vibrant yellow color was the preferred color of historic residents. The cheerful color is welcoming and embracing and is best suited for both formal and family-style settings.
"Warm golds tend to look better in more saturated variations, while the more lemony, cooler yellows look best when kept paler and less saturated," said color consultant Barbara Jacobs, owner of Barbara Jacobs Color and Design, in Medfield, Massachusetts.
White: The all-time favourite color makes a room appear brighter. White combined with a touch of green, gray and pink among others can render into a colourful living room.
"White is a perfect backdrop for any style of living room. Dover White has just a hint of yellow to make it very livable and warm," said Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams said, "while Snowbound is a cooler white that is perfect for more modern interiors."
