The "Star Wars" fever continually increases as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" premiere date is fast approaching. Numerous fan theories have emerged but none of them discussed the biggest rumor which has been going on for the past 35 years.
As per Business Insider, it first surfaced after Mark Hamill's car accident on January 11, 1977 which left him with a fractured face. Physicians removed a cartilage from his ear to be used on his nose. The accident happened before he gained stardom, so it wasn't really a big deal way back then.
Hamill then gained popularity after "Star Wars" became a hit and his accident was finally noticed. Fans speculated that the scene on the sequel "A New Hope" where in Luke was mauled on the face by a Wampa was intentionally written to explain his post-accident looks.
These speculations however were never confirmed and it has been one of the biggest mysteries which circulated over the past 35 years.
To answer the speculations, during one of his interviews for the Blu-ray commentary of "The Empire Strikes Back", "Star Wars" creator George Lucas stated that though the Wampa scene helped justified Mark Hamill's new look for the views, the scene however was not written because the accident occurred.
"At the end of 'A New Hope' he had been in a car accident and I knew Mark was going to look a little different than he was in the first film, But my feeling was some time had past, they've been in the Rebellion fighting, that kind of thing, so the change was justifiable. There's a scene in the film where Mark gets beat up by the monster [Wampa], which helps even more, but that wasn't really the meaning of why we wrote the monster in the beginning. We needed something to keep the film suspenseful at the beginning while the Empire is looking for them."
In relation to his role on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," numerous promotional materials were already released; none of them however hinted Luke Skywalker's whereabouts. As per Realty Today, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams stated that Luke's absence on most promotional materials were no accident. They intend to hide his identity to build up excitement and keep the fans in question. He did make it clear that he does not want the teaser to dish out everything at once so that "Star Wars" fans would still have something to look forward to.
