Reports confirm that Netflix has officially dominated the Internet. A report published by Sandvine, an internet service tracking firm, shows that Netflix has acquired 70 percent of the downstream traffic in North America during evening peak hours.
The survey result, shows the numbers of how audio video companies perform by monitoring their downstream traffic. Netflix is on the first place with 70 percent. Youtube is surprisingly behind with only 16 percent while Amazon Video and iTunes are kept as low as 3 percent and 2.8 percent.
According to QZ, Sandvine surveys in 2011 recorded that Netflix had 70 percent share in North American internet traffic.

The growth of the company is greatly influenced by two factors: business strategy and daring creative decisions. But above all, it is America's insatiable appetite for entertainment that keeps the money rolling for entertainment providers like Netflix.
Another good news that comes with this increase in the Netflix internet traffic is its contribution in the mitigation of piracy. BitTorrent is facing a great decrease in overall internet traffic.
Torrent sites have been notorious for being the vessel in the proliferation of pirated content online. "While the file-sharing service BitTorrent once occupied 31 percent of the total Internet traffic in 2008, this year it occupied 5 percent of the total Internet traffic during the entire day," Christian Science Monitor states in their post about how high quality video streaming controls piracy.
This data debunks the myth that free is always good in relation to video streaming. Consumer behavior towards good service like the one provided by Netflix has the potential to finally eliminate piracy.
