China, the world's second largest economy may be experiencing a gloomy economic weather, but that hasn't stopped the rich from amusing themselves. When a normal seven-star luxury boutique restaurant becomes a tad bit boring, the Chinese dine in style mid air, while the whole table is suspended by a crane at a height of more than 160-feet above ground.
"Dinner in the Sky" is a part of "Events in the Sky," a Belgian events company that provides clients a unique venue at any public place, be it a race course, golf course or a vineyard.
The exclusive dining concept of "Dinner in the sky" allows a client to host dinners, luncheons or cocktail parties for an approximate of 22 guests who will be seated in a VIP box and elevated by a crane, while they enjoy exotic food from the world's most famous chefs.
Though this is definitely not for those who are scared of heights, the restaurant ensures utmost safety. Guests will have to buckle in their seat belts and enjoy while they are being lifted up in the air. On the platform, there is an open space in the middle where the chef whips up the delicacies. There is standing space for the waiting crew as well.
"Dinner in the Sky" opened in collaboration with The Four Seasons Hotel Pudong in Shanghai, Friday. The dining session is available for usually 8 hours but the time can be customized according to the client's wish.
"Dinner in the Sky is a unique event meant for anyone who wishes to transform an ordinary meal or meeting into a magical moment that will leave a lasting impression on their guests! Breakfast in the sky, lunch in the sky, cocktails in the sky, meeting in the sky, internet café in the sky... there is no limit to your imagination," the official website states.
This extraordinary dining experience comes at an extraordinary price (of course!).
Dinner would cost you $1,430 per person exclusive of service taxes while you would have to shell out $622 per person for lunch. Afternoon tea charges are as high as $303 per person, according to ECNS.com.
As the 22 guests dined mid air Friday, several people gathered below to watch the scene. So how did it feel to dine in the sky?
"It was a bit scary at the beginning, but after a while, I felt OK. The view up there is really good, but it got shaky sometimes," a diner told China.org.
"We are always busy working in these office buildings. It's great to see people do something really different for a change," another said.
