Executive producer and head writer of Fargo, Noah Hawley, confirms that the 3rd season of the critically acclaimed crime series will not be ready before 2017.
In a conference call with Variety, the showrunner has given details about the next step for the series. He says, "The reality is you won't see it in 2016. It's a winter show for better or worse. There is not time to shoot another year before this winter is over."
Currently, Hawley and the rest of the show's writers are taking their time and writing even the most specific details of the story. He shares that he is just about halfway through breaking the season. The writing process would take a few months considering that they will be back in production November of next year.
Fargo's home network, FX, has been accommodating the special nature of this anthology, like for instance, Season 1 and 2 had a year and a half gap. Hawley notes this leniency and in return, they give them 10 hour shows with movie quality instead of just mere television episodes.
The writer teased that the third season will be set in 2010, and though we cannot expect any of the characters in Season 1 to be present in the next, Hawley implied one possibility for season 3. He says, "That's not to say that one of our stories might not intersect with characters we've seen before for a certain period of time."
Hawley gave a heads up to the series' fans that they won't find any reference to Season 3 within the last season, as they did not connect the two stories. This makes it all the more exciting for the anthology since it leaves the question of what else can they do with the 3-time Emmy awardee.
"In the third year the question becomes, structurally and stylistically: What's left to say? What do we do that feels similar, but different so we're not repeating ourselves? We're always looking for connections and things that fit into the larger body of work we're building, hopefully without ever seeming twee or precious or too clever by far," the showrunner shared.
