Netflix Tops List of Google Australia's Most Searched Terms of 2015; Lamar Odom Is the Most Searched Individual

Netflix topped the list of the most searched terms on Google Australia this year, followed by Rugby World Cup which resulted from the country's heartbreaking loss from New Zealand.

Mashable reported that Aussies had a year of real highs and lows based on their 2015 Google searches. Released on Dec. 16, Google annual trends report showed Aussies' concern over the health of Lamar Odom, a former NBA superstar and Khloe Kardashian's estranged husband. Lamar Odom made the top three most searched terms of 2015, followed by UFC queen Ronda Rousey and the Asian cup.

A breakdown from Google Australia's top five trending news items includes Paris, Bali 9, Hepatitis A, Cyclone Marcia, and Charlie Hebdo. Australians placed Netflix again at the top spot of the most searched "what is?" questions in 2015.

The top five of "where is?" search terms in 2015 brought by Australians includes Tunasia, Mali, Gallipolli and Nepal. A state in west coast Australia, "where is Perth" came in at the number eight spot.

"Xur" became the top one "where is?" term in 2015 by Aussies, which refers not to a place but to an imaginary character from the "Destiny" video game. On the other hand, pancake, slow cooker, chicken, Thermomix, and lasagna recipes are the top five recipe searches in 2015 by Australians.

Meanwhile, The Atlantic made a broader look at the 2015 data. In general, next to googling specific individuals, among the most popularly searched words are natural events like Hurricane Patricia, Hurricane Joaquin, Tropical Storm Erika, Tropical Storm Bill, and the Nepal earthquake. There are estimated 85 million searches about Nepal earthquake, and Paris attacks-related searches reached up to 897 million.

The worldwide "how to" and "what is" searches are "What is 0 divided by 0?," which is related to the iPhone assistant Siri. "What is Ashley Madison?" (a dating service) is one of the top searches of "what is" followed by "What is a Buckeye?" (a tree and also a mascot of a football team), "What is the Charlie Charlie Challenge?" (apparently a game involving pencils that summon the devil).

The top "how to" searches of 2015 include "how to tie a tie," "how to solve a rubix cube," "how to kiss," "how to walk in heels," "how to do a French braid," "how to use beard balm," and "how to keep puppy from eating poop."
