'The Revenant': Leonardo DiCaprio Recalls Gruelling Filming Experience, Eating Bison's Liver On Set

Seriously, what cannot Leonardo DiCaprio do?

The five-time Oscar nominee has been making epic films (read: "Titanic," anyone?) and now, he will be dishing another one, the upcoming "The Revenant."

Aside from committing to a physically demanding role, the actor had to grow a seriously impressive beard, ET reports.

During the premiere of the thriller at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Wednesday, DiCaprio, 41, opened up to ET on what it was like when it was time to get rid of his beard. He says, "It was like shaving dreads or something. I had that beard for a year and a half."

"The Revenant," already gathering Oscar buzz at this early stage, is about the story of Hugh Glass, a real eal-life frontiersman and explorer. He went on expedition in an uncharted American wilderness in 1823. Such expedition was not without danger, all the more at that time and age. He was abandoned by his companions while nursing a wound he got from a bear attach. The winter was harsh. He survived and vowed to take revenge on this who have left him for dead.

The filming was done on Canada and Argentine and it an easy one either. DiCaprio continues, "It was amazing for all of us, as an entire film crew, to go into the wilderness like this, to really go on this epic journey all together, and really tackle the challenges that nature gave us."

The famous actor's mother provided a great deal of support for him during filming, visiting him one week a a time and it is something he proudly shares, ET continues.

As if the filming was not gruelling enough, DiCaprio said he had to bison's liver as part of one of the scenes, he said in an interview with Variety. Apparently, the prop prepared was not real enough. "The bad part is the membrane around it," DiCaprio says. "It's like a balloon. When you bite into it, it bursts in your mouth."

"The Revenant" comes out in limited release on Christmas Day, and opens wide Jan. 8.
