'Empire Season 2' is currently on its midseason break and will make a comeback on March 30.
The midseason finale left viewers with the ambitious Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) revealing how his son Jamal (Jussie Smollett) was seeing Skye Summers (Alicia Keys) to Jameson (William Fichtner) who wants to promote Jamal as a gay artist. Such plan could go to ashes as being a gay artist and hooking up with a girl could not be the right fit especially for the fans and his career.
"Without wanting to give away a whole lot of story, Jamal has definitively said 'I’m gay.' And I believe Jamal can say that, even if he might have had sex with a woman once or twice," showrunner Ilene Chaiken told TV Line.
"Who Jamal has sex with is nobody else’s business. We all know that, yet that’s the fight we fight as gay people. But then there’s Lucious Lyon — and Lucious will stoop low to get what he wants."
Moreover, it could not just be the future of Jamal that could potentially break the father-son bond, but also the fact that the two Empire characters are fighting for American Sound Award for Song of the Year Award. The rivalry could lead to more competition between the two since Lucious wants it more than anything else.
Chaiken also hinted that Lucious could have possibly done things that could mess up his career’s son in the continuation of the season this March. What he did and what resulted from it can only be answered as the next half of season 2 airs.
While things may not go smoothly for Jamal, he has Skye to support him. The two were caught kissing in episode 9 as they wrote an emotional song entitled, “Powerful.” Skye understood that Jamal is gay and would not want to mess with his emotions.
The tension between Jamal and Lucious is something to look forward to in episode 11, especially that the latter lost his company to Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray). How the two will handle the situation adds up to the tension that is already building in Empire. In addition, how Skye will react to Jamal’s sexuality is also interesting.
