Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the newly crowned Miss Universe 2015, was obviously confused during the awkward coronation held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Dec. 20, Sunday.
Nichelle Turner of Entertainment Tonight spoke to Wurtzbach at the backstage after the pageant. "I was confused. I wasn't sure what was going on," said Wurtzbach. "I didn't expect that to happen at all."
Wurtzbach spoke up about the mistaken announcement of the host Steve Harvey when Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez was incorrectly declared as the Miss Universe 2015 winner. Shortly after, Harvey admitted that he made a mistake. The host showed the audience the result card indicating that Miss Philippines is the real winner of the world's most prestigious beauty pageant.
The hailed and crowned beauty queen said she was doubtful to go to the center of the stage thinking it could be another mistake. She was waiting for the signal coming from the floor director while the ladies told her to come and walk through the stage.
The half-German, half-Filipino beauty shared that she was looking for the staff to get a cue or signal "but even they were confused." Wurtzbach added that she was really uncertain if she was the winner and claimed that she had to ask her manager many times if she really won.
When asked if she was able to talk to Miss Colombia, she said, "She was crying and then there was a crowd around her, the girls who were comforting her."
Wurtzbach said that while she was very close to Gutierrez, she thought it was not the right time to reach out or apologize to the Latina beauty for what happened. "So maybe I'll do that in the future," she said.
Meanwhile, Miss Colombia addressed the controversial incident in a brief interview. In a video posted on Miss Universe Facebook page, Gutierrez was seen in tears and being surrounded by some fellow Miss Universe contestants.
"Everything happens for a reason," she said with a smile, adding that she was happy for all the things she did at the pageant and thanking everyone for their support.
