J.K. Rowling has had a lot on her plate. Aside from writing the screenplay for "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them," the 50-year-old author has just endorsed Noma Dumezweni, a black actress, to play Hermione Granger in the London theatre production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."
It all started when Rowling was asked on Twitter about what she thought of the casting choices. Rowling clarified that the skin color of Hermione Granger was "never specified."
"Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione," Rowling tweeted.
Although British actress Emma Watson portrayed Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" film adaptations, the character's race was never actually described in the novels. Apparently, Rowling only described the beloved muggle-born witch to have "brown hair and brown eyes."
Apparently, fans have been yearning for a black Hermione Granger for a while now. Vulture reports:
"Fans have been imagining Hermione as black for years now, despite the bare minimum of evidence in the books. In the 'Harry Potter' text, Hermione's race is never specified. The only direct indication is in the third installment, 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,' where Hermione is described as 'very brown' in contract to a freckly Ron Weasley."
According to TIME, Swaziland-born Dumezweni took to share her sentiments on Twitter about the glowing recommendation she received not only from Rowling, but from "Harry Potter" fans as well, with regard to the casting announcement.
"Um... So. Just seen my feed BLOW UP... What's THAT about," she tweeted.
The theatre production of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is based on Rowling's story, albeit written by Jack Thorne.
The story focuses on Harry Potter (played by Jamie Parker), Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley (portrayed by Paul Thornley) as adults who work for the Ministry of Magic.
JK Rowling net worth is $1 billion.
