A high-ranking official from search engine giant Google has revealed that the company's next mobile operating system dubbed as Android "N" will be named by the users via an online poll, a report from iDigital Times said.
"Maybe what I'll do next time, is when we're working on the next release of Android, Android N, maybe we'll do an online poll on what the name should be," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said as quoted in the report.
"And if all Indians vote, I think we can make (an Indian name) it happen," Pichai said. "When I meet my mom, I'll ask her for suggestions." Pichai's statement was during his speaking engagement in a student forum held at Shir Ram College of Commerce in New Delhi.
"Android operating system titles have always been named after tasty sweets: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, and of course the latest OS Android Marshmallow. Android 'N' is still a while out. The final version probably won't be ready until next fall. If Google doesn't change things up, the next operating system will be previewed and the official name announced at the company's annual developer conference, Google I/O, in May 2016. Google will want to have Android 'N' ready for its future Nexus smartphones expected in September or October 2016," the report said.
It should be noted that this remains to be a speculation unless Google issues a formal statement that the online poll will determine the name of the upcoming mobile operating system.
"There's a lot we look forward to each time a new major Android release is on its way. Sure, there's the functional side of things - what new features are landing, how Google's working to enhance performance, and what steps are being taken to improve user privacy and device security - that's well and good. But on a much more lighthearted note, Android fans find themselves locked in a guessing match as they attempt to work out just what tasty treat Google intends to use for the new Android's name," Pocketnow said.
