'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Director J.J. Abrams Justifies That Shocking Kylo Ren Twist [Spoiler Alert]

Star Wars fans have wept and asked over and over why the Kylo Ren scene had to happen, and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' director J.J. Abrams has finally got some answers. But before we talk about that, let this serve as a spoiler alert for those who haven't seen the movie yet. Seriously, why haven't you yet?

According to Entertainment Weekly, Abrams talked about the scene were Han Solo was mercilessly killed by his own son, right after they had seemingly patched things up. Han Solo assured the monster that he would help him come out of the dark side, and the two had a poignant moment (at least for Han Solo) then all of a sudden, Kylo Ren uses his lightsaber to kill his father.

Abrams said that they had to make the tough choice of killing a character that the fans have come to love, so a villain that would cause ultimate hate and fear would rise.  Abrams explained, "Star Wars had the greatest villain in cinema history. So, how you bring a new villain into that world is a very tricky thing," Abrams told the crowd. "We knew we needed to do something f-king bold. The only reason why Kylo Ren has any hope of being a worthy successor is because we lose one of the most beloved characters."

Abrams emphasized that the title of the movie refers not only to the heroes, but it is also the awakening of the dark force. By killing his own father, Kylo Ren has proven to everyone including himself, that he is completely gone to the dark side.

Referring to Han's death the director said, "It's this massive tradeoff. How can we possibly do that!? But... if we hadn't done that, the movie wouldn't have any guts at all. It felt very dangerous."
