The much-awaited fight between undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao will be dubbed as the "biggest fight ever," Mayweather Sr. recently claimed.
Saying that a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout will "definitely" happen, the elder Mayweather told FightHype that the matchup is going to be "the biggest fight that has ever been in life."
"I'ma tell you right now, he never told me the fight's gonna happen, but I'ma tell you, the fight's gonna happen. You mark my words and we'll see. And it needs to happen. Just like Ali and Joe Frazier, or Ali and George Foreman, something like that, man, it's one of those fights like that.
"The world wants to see it and they'll want to see it again when Floyd beats Pacquiao. I'm pretty sure Floyd is gonna make it look where people are going to want to see it again, because I'm just saying, Floyd's gonna pick Pacquiao apart, man," he said.
The American fighter has two remaining fights with his current deal with Showtime and he has earlier claimed that he will retire after these two fights. Yahoo Sports said that this will still give Pacquiao's and Mayweather's camps time to talk about the details of the match which could probably be done next year.
If the fight does happen, Mayweather Sr. is confident that his son is going to "kick (Pacquiao's) ass."
"Floyd is not scared of Pacquiao, man. Matter of fact, it's going to be easier because Pacquiao is tailor-made for Floyd. He's tailor-made to eat the right hand all day long. You gotta remember, Pacquiao is a southpaw. He's a southpaw and Floyd is right-handed, so he'll eat right hands and left hooks all night, and more than likely, he will be going to sleep again. Believe me!" the elder Mayweather confidently told FightHype.
Should the fight take place in the coming months or next year, Yahoo Sports said that the earnings for Mayweather would surpass the recent $41.5 million reap against Canelo Alvarez. Talks of the Pacquiao-Mayweather started even before 2009 but the two fighters have never agreed on anything.
In 2010, it was reported that the two camps failed to agree on the purse money while in 2012, news circled that Mayweather turned down the $100 million offer to fight Pacquiao.
Rumors of the fight continue after Top Rank CEO Bob Arum announced that the two boxers could face off early next year. Confirmation on the details will, however, still rely on the decision of the two fighters to sit down and discuss what they plan to do in the coming year. Whether they will both end their careers with a megafight that will leave a mark in the history of boxing or not remains highly-anticipated.
