This Eco-Friendly Home Spends only $2 Monthly for Their Electricity

This home in West Kirby, England proves that going green does not necessarily come with a huge price tag.

This eco-friendly home does not only help the environment, but it also helps the pockets of its owners. Designed by the UK-based John McCall Architects led by Colin Usher, the house reportedly has very low utility bills, and high energy efficiency.

According to Elle décor, the total energy used of the occupants of the house had a total of 3453kWhrs. This includes heating, lighting, hot water and cooking. This consumption was balanced out by 3338kWhrs of energy using their solar panels on the roof meaning they only consume £15, or about $2, annually.

According the architectural company's website, "This private house was designed to have very low energy usage and is constructed using an exceptionally well insulated masonry and concrete structure, triple glazed windows, air source heat pump and is carefully orientated to make the most of the solar gains and to maximise the electricity generating roof panels."

The home was made with high ceilings and spacious areas combined with modern heating and ventilation technology, contributing to the low energy costs.

The design of the home is contemporary, with huge windows, and of course, solar panels on the roof. Just outside their huge glass doors, is a dining setup perfect for brunches and coffee. The walls are painted with clean white and the furniture has a soft neutral palette.

The kitchen space is maximized by placing the storage cabinets, which also act as table for preparing food, adjoining the wall. The living room has the basics like a coffee table, sofas and a TV. It is very homey and well lit with natural lighting.

Aside from choosing solar panels at home, this family shows their being environment friendly by having an area just for their plants. This space, which also has a huge window, enough for their plants to get sunlight, is small but is maximized well. There is even a table for two that blends well with the house plants the family have grown.
