'House of Cards' Showrunner To Work on 'Mindhunter' Series Starring Charlize Theron

"House of Cards" helmer David Fincher expands his partnership with Netflix for a new TV series starring Charlize Theron.

Deadline exclusively learned that Fincher's "Mindhunters" will be his second Netflix project after the critically-acclaimed "House of Cards" with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as lead stars.

Aside from Fincher, Theron will also serve as an executive producer under her Denver and Delilah production company.

British writer Joe Penhall, who was known for his work on "Sunny Afternoon," will pen the "Mindhunter" script.

Fincher will then take the same route of collaborating on the development of "House of Cards" with Spacey. This time, he will develop "Mindhunters" alongside the award-winning actress.

"Mindhunter" will be based on the 1966 book entitled "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit" by ex-special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

The non-fiction book revolves around Douglas who later on became the inspiration behind Thomas Harris' "Red Dragon" and "The Silence of the Lambs" novels. The book also took note of his journey while researching about the most wanted criminals of our generation.

Deadline also reported that the "Mindhunter" series have been under production for six years. The TV project was first catered on HBO from Fincher, Theron and FOX 21. It was noted that "Dexter" showrunner Scott Buck was also attached as the screenwriter few years ago. However, in the end, both FOX 21 and Buck are not expected to return for this Netflix project.

"Mind hunter" will mark as Fincher's come back to the crime-thriller genre after his movies "Se7en" and "Zodiac." His upcoming projects include two HBO series "Video Synchronicity" and "Utopia."

This year, Theron recently starred in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and Dark Places." The "Mindhunter" TV series will be Theron's latest TV stint after her several guest appearances on "Arrested Development" in 2005 and "Saturday Night Live" in 2000 and 2014.

Fincher's "House of Cards" Season 3 will premiere on Feb. 27 on Netflix.
