It was previously reported that "Miitomo" would be the first ever mobile game from Nintendo. It is free to play but will have micro-transactions for customization purposes. According to a previous The Wall Street Journal report, the video game maker's President, Tatsumi Kimishima, announced that the said smartphone app will be launched sometime in March 2016. Moreover, with "Miitomo," the president said, "users will be able design their own avatars, or miis, to communicate with other users."
Since then, according to Express, fans are confused whether "Miitomo" would be a game or a social app. But a recent Q&A session with DeNA CEO published in The Wall Street Journal, has revealed how "Miitomo" is expected to function. DeNA President Isao Moriyasu said, "There's that distinct Nintendo feel to the game that gives you a certain comfort and nostalgia. The user interface, feel and sound--it's all very Nintendo."
"Miitomo places more emphasis on entertainment. The process of discovering new aspects of your friends via Miis can be quite fun," he added. "One distinct aspect of Miitomo is how you can configure your Mii to have it look very similar to yourself. Communicating with friends who actually look like your friends in real life is a distinctly different feeling from text-based communication."
"We're thinking of linking the game with users' Facebook friend lists. I think it could be fun connecting with friends people don't often communicate with."
Based on Moriyasu words, the "Miitomo" does seem like a game with social functions. On the other hand, Moriyasu has also said that the app will connect Nintendo console users and allow games to be played interactively on smartphones. Fans will surely be able to judge that once it is out this coming year.
And speaking of games that can be adapted on the mobile platform and accessible through Miitomo, Moriyasu has said that there will be mini-games, adding that, "we've already been collaborating with many companies, including Bandai Namco and Disney."
