The Washington Nationals is indeed gearing up for the next season. After the recent signing of Daniel Murphy to start at second base for them, it is now being reported that the Nationals have also agreed to sign Stephen Drew. According to CBS Sports Jon Heyman, "Stephen Drew has deal with nats. $3M plus $1.25M incentives."
This move has surprised some fans on the sidelines, but for some it is actually a sensible move. As reported by cbssports, the 32 year old second baseman "hit 201/.271/.381 (79 OPS+) with 16 doubles and 17 homers in 428 plate appearances," and despite the criticism of some fans, Drew still has some power on him and a quality defence.
Adding Drew in the Nationals roster would mean a reunion between him and former Diamondbacks scouting director and currently Nationals GM, Mike Rizzo. Despite Drew not being able to make it as a top quality regular, Rizzo still seems to believe on the skillsets of Drew which he could bring to the team.
As highlighted by MLB Trade Rumors, Drew will see much of action in the Nationals against right-handed pitching. His presence would also mean a rest at times for Anthony Rendon and Daniel Murphy, and he could even let Murphy slide in at first base if the Nationals will rest their injured player , Ryan Zimmerman against some righties during a game.
However, it was also pointed out by the same report that Drew will not have to hit all that much as a "utility option." And with such function and a guaranteed $3 million, Drew's rumored transfer is not that bad at all. Whatever the truth behind the reported acquisition of the Nationals, guess we would just have to wait for their official statement and see how Stephen Drew will contribute to his new team.
