"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder and former cast member Nina Dobrev was recently named as TV's Best Couple by MTV News.
According to the publication, Somerhalder and Dobrev's success at becoming one of the most sought-after love teams on TV had to do with the loyalty of their fans.
The publication added that one of the reasons why fans love Elena Gilbert on "The Vampire Diaries" was because she's timeless.
This is also the very reason why thousands of "TVD" fans across the globe reacted negatively upon learning that she will leave the show after season 6.
"Elena may be temporarily gone, but she's not forgotten. In its seventh season, 'The Vampire Diaries' has managed to capture some of its dark and sexy magic back. It's witty and fun and decisively not bogged down by complicated mythology anymore," the publication noted.
Meanwhile, another reason why Somerhalder and Dobrev's characters became one of the most popular couples of TV was because they both possessed flaws.
"They were perfectly imperfect together. They saw each other at their worsts. When Elena shut off her humanity, Damon didn't give up on her. And don't forget Damon killed Vicki and her brother. The fact that Elena still loved Damon after what he's done speaks volumes to their slow-burning romance," they added.
In other news, the publication also credited the fans of Elena and Damon for helping to keep them extremely popular on social media, according to Australia News Network.
Throughout the past couple of seasons, fans have been tweeting their thoughts about Delena's romance, and they are also known for creating interesting storylines about the characters.
"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is currently on a short hiatus for the holidays. The CW series is expected to return to the network on Jan. 29, 2016 at 8 p.m. ET.
