"Castle" which stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic as Rick Castle and Kate Beckett is one of ABC's shows with a lot of devoted fans and viewers. However, CarterMatt reported that the show lost around 40 percent of its live audience since its sixth season. Given such drop in its viewer supports, it has been reported that the show's producers made some controversial decision which is unlikely for the season 9 to happen.
"Castle's" co-showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter discussed to TV Line about the final season. In the interview, it was pointed out that the show has been getting low ratings since September. And given that, is it possible that this is the final season. Do they have an end game in mind just in case ABC will not renew the show for the ninth season?
Hawley answered, "The reality is that [the network execs] won't make that decision until very late. So our plan is just to tell a satisfying story and try to wrap up the season in an exciting way."
Winter also said that just like show creators Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller wrote the season 8 finale, they will also do it the same way. They will also consider that it will be the end of it.
As he said, "Andrew and Terri wrote it as if it was the series finale." He then added, "and there's a very good chance that we'll most likely be doing that here. We hope to come back for Season 9, but we have to act as if [we might not]."
Hawley then said that, "We think the show has a lot of life in it." He continued, "Especially in the wake of the Sturm und Drang that Rick and Kate endured during the first stretch of Season 8."
According to Latin Post, Season 8 has been very challenging for everyone since the low number when it comes to its ratings. That is why the showrunners work so hard to make the best season finale which is also fits as a possible farewell to the whole series itself.
As Hawley said, "That's the great thing from our side about the storytelling this year, that we do feel energized by the shake-up and what it has allowed us to do."
The "Castle" mid-season premiere is set to air on Monday, Feb. 1 at 10 p.m. on ABC.
