The Force is indeed strong as the latest "Star Wars" movie has overtaken "Titanic" based on US box office records. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has made $686.4 million in US ticket sales as of Friday, a Daily Mail report said.
According to reports released on Saturday by Disney, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is also closing in fast on "Avatar"'s record. The movie is also an international hit making $679.2 million.
"Titanic" held a strong lead since it premiered in 1997 making $658 million at the US box office. The movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet which was known to be popular even in the international movie market.
Before the movie premiered in December, Jurassic World held the lead in the US making $652 million. People were convinced that this record was indestructible but as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" premiered; everyone was convinced that a new record will be made.
It is also important to note that the sci-fi movie is still set to premiere in China on January 9. Producers say that it will rake in even more profits as it opens in the world's largest box office markets.
A lot of fans around the world have waited for this J.J. Abrams reboot. And of course the franchise is not just banking on the movie. The latest Star Wars flick also has toys, collectibles, clothing, fashion accessories, games, apps, comic books and so many more making it a hit across all industries.
The film has already made $1.7 million globally and has also made it the number 7 highest grossing film in history according to Box Office Mojo.
If "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" keeps up its record this first week of 2016, it could overtake Avatar on Monday according to sales figures. The James Cameron flick remains to be the highest-selling film in US history with $750 million in ticket sales.
